Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder: The Ever-Evolving Artistry of Makeup by Joyc Young
Beauty has always been a subjective concept, evolving through time and influenced by societal norms and trends. In the modern era, beauty standards are constantly changing. What is considered beautiful today may not have been so in the past. This article delves into the journey of a professional makeup artist, Joyc Young, who believes that beauty is not just skin deep but also a reflection of one's confidence and inner glow
A Passion for Art and Beauty
Joyc Young's love for art started during senior high when she was inspired by the renowned painter Bob Ross, whose Afro hair and captivating TV show encouraged her to pursue Fine Arts majoring in Advertising at the University of Santo Tomas (UST). After her graduation, she honed her skills further through various photography and graphics art workshops. Joyc got into the wedding industry in 2010 as an apprentice photographer then by January 2012, delved into the world of makeup artistry. She began joining a series of classes that sparked her interest to learn more about this transformative art.
The Never-Ending Journey of Makeup Artistry
For Joyc Young, learning makeup is a never-ending process. She continually seeks opportunities to update and elevate her skills as a professional makeup artist. Joyc thrives on challenges and pushes herself to the limit to become more creative, constantly pursuing her artistic vision.
Memorable Milestones and Experiences
One of Joyc Young's most memorable experiences as a makeup artist was graduating from an international makeup school. She recalls it as a very inspiring, brilliant, and demanding journey. On top of that, she had the opportunity to attend the prestigious IMATS (International Makeup-Artists Trade Show) in New York, where she learned from her favorite celebrity makeup artist, Kevin James Bennett and met the talented Danessa Myricks. It was an extraordinary three-day event that further fueled her passion for makeup artistry. Knowledge gained from different platform artists, watching a live makeup competition and shopping for pro brands was so riveting that she’s looking forward to attending another in the near future. Moreover, she had the opportunity to learn from Mac Pro’s Director of Makeup Artistry Gregory Arlt back when Joyc was a Mac Events Artist. Joyc is also into the world of semi-permanent makeup with Phibrows and is expanding her horizons in this category as well. Thirsting for more experience, she is also an Nc2, Nc3 certificate holder and a TM1 trainer for Tesda
Working with Celebrities and Influences
Joyc Young has had the pleasure of working with various celebrities and socialites, both male and female. Among her favorites were doing makeup for the kind-hearted and age-defying Jackie Lou Blanco, the beautiful Joyce Pring, as well as the laid-back and humorous Empoy. Joyc's influences in makeup include Kevin James Bennett, who created the "bullet-proof" makeup style suitable for humid climates like the Philippines, and the creative genius Pat McGrath, known for her innovative editorial runway works. She admires local celebrity artists like Mariah Santos, Jelly Eugenio, MK Qua, Denise Ochoa, Tin Duque, and Mickey See. She’s also loving the works of fellow bridal artists Nikki Betos, Odessa, Joanne Quizon and her all time favorite Albert Kurniawan’s professional work. She takes pride in being mentored by one of the best local sfx, prosthesis and makeup artist extraordinaire Miss Faye Young.
Challenges and Ethical Approach
Makeup artistry, for Joyc Young, is a challenging yet rewarding profession that pushes artists to their limits, enabling them to create stunning looks suitable for various media platforms. Joyc emphasizes the importance of ethics in her work. She advocates artists to be strictly punctual, professional, respectful, considerate, and humble. Adding too that she loves exchanging tips and techniques with fellow artists and clients alike.
Joyc Young, the Makeup Curator
Joyc Young's passion for makeup extends beyond her profession. She considers herself a Makeup Curator, carefully collecting the best among the beauty brands here and all over the world. As an artist, she adapts to current trends while ensuring that her makeup choices will suit that particular event. She pays close attention to the clients’ features like the face shape, eyes, nose, lips, skin tone, and skin condition.
Makeup Tips for All
For non-professionals, Joyc Young emphasizes the importance of considering one's skin type before trying on makeup. She advises testing products in broad daylight rather than relying solely on the makeup counters' lighting. She equally stresses the significance of using toner, moisturizer, and sunblock based on the skins’ condition. Further highlighting that there are plenty of great local and imported brands suitable for our Asian skin.
Professional Makeup Etiquette
As a personal mantra- a true professional makeup artist not only maintains clean sanitized tools and keeps her makeup station organized but is also punctual in every booked event. What’s more, the makeup artist comes to work in appropriate attire, a humble attitude, and respectful of her clients' privacy.
Pricing and Services
Joyc Young offers her expertise and services for special events such as birthdays, graduation, anniversaries, engagement sessions / prenups, and weddings. Various packages are available based on the number of heads, add-ons (hair extensions, accessories, contact lenses) and location of the venue. Aside from that, she does makeup for themed photoshoots (family, maternity, boudoir, and period makeup), magazine, Tvc, film, mtv, fashion shows, pageants, theater, sfx makeup and prosthesis.
Joyc Young's journey as a makeup artist is a testament to the ever-changing nature of beauty and the evolutionary power of makeup. Her devotion for the arts, photography, and makeup artistry has allowed her to keep on excelling in her field while constantly developing and adapting to the latest trends. With Joyc's dedication to ethics and professionalism, she hopes to serve as an inspirational example to aspiring makeup artists. As well as wanting to remind non-professionals about the importance of skincare and responsible product testing. Ultimately, Joyc Young's artistic vision and commitment to her craft will carry on to elevate our beauty industry, leaving a lasting impression on those she works with.
