FAITH PORTOS EBUEN

A DEBUTANTE’S SURPRISE FOR A LIFETIME

By Mylene Campos

In Philippine culture, a debut marks a lady’s womanhood. She then transitions from adolescence to adulthood and is formally introduced to society as a woman. Much like weddings, debuts have also become one of the most important occasions in the country. Unlike olden times where celebrations in the city were far grander than those done in the province, debuts today have become more modern and extravagant regardless of one's location and social class. And for Faith Portos, honoring her coming of age in the town of Manapla, Negros Occidental (home to one of the best wedding suppliers and events venues) was, in her own words, “amazing, magical and perfect”.

THE DEBUTANTE | Faith sees herself as a simple and mature lady who is content with what she already has. With dreams of achieving her goals in life (to see her name on the honors list, to receive a college diploma, to get a decent job and be a successful nurse, to have her own business), she also hopes to make more amazing memories with the people she loves. And new memories was what she received from her surprise debut.

A WONDERFUL SURPRISE | The debutante shared, “I did not expect or think that they would prepare something for my 18th birthday. I just thought that the celebration was organized for my Tita Rhea, who was getting married on the same day. Overjoyed isn’t exactly the best word to describe what I felt when they surprised me because it was more than that. It was also overwhelming to see my family, relatives, and friends, as I walked in front of them.”

The debutante knew nothing of her family’s plans for her 18th birthday because they've already covered all the preparations, including her Tita Ana who took charge in organizing the event. Many have also hinted that she might have to make a speech for her Tita Rhea’s wedding if she's called to say a few words. Odd as it was, she still made one, only for her to use it later on. “The day finally came. It felt like the world stopped spinning. I felt so nervous as people stared at me." Despite looming worries earlier in the day (heavy rains were experienced that afternoon), everything came together for a magical night worth remembering. "I really couldn’t thank my family, Tita Ana and my friends enough.”

CHERISHED MOMENTS | Faith shared, “my favorite moments were the unexpected special numbers and the 18 roses because the men who carried the flowers were the important ones in my life.” Moreover, her favorite gifts that night were the people who attended her birthday. “I’m grateful to those who came despite the bad weather conditions and the far location, especially to those who had work the following day.”

WORDS TO LIVE BY | “My message for myself is to stay strong, so that I may be able to face all of my future trials in this new chapter of my life. Always remember to pray and to trust God because only he can help my family and me.” Faith also shared her cousin Abby’s advice to her now that she’s turned 18. “You are now a fine lady. You should be ready to face all of your responsibilities in life. Don’t rush into things and don’t be too quick to decide when you’re emotional. Stay the same and welcome to the real world!”
